Liverpool will have to find an edge over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City if they’re to secure their first ever Premier League title. With the current champions having strengthened with the likes of Angelino, Rodri and Cancelo coming in - as well as Kevin De Bruyne returning from injury and Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus seeing their responsibilities increased. Liverpool, on the other hand, haven’t added to their squad in any significant way, but they do have a young side that will continue to grow.
For example, Fabinho is will play his first full season having taken a couple of months to be integrated in 18/19. The Brazilian now very much understands his role - cover the full backs, win the ball back and distribute it to the flanks. His recent performance against Arsenal was outstanding. He completed 93% of his passes, 27 out of 32 in the final third, found his target with 6 out of 7 of his long passes, made 6 ball recoveries, 4 key passes, won 2 out his three tackles and grabbed an assist. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah also really stood out against Unai Emery’s team - and you’d struggle to find a better right flank in world football. Liverpool also seem to have made big strides in a tactical sense. There is evidence that Liverpool may be going down another stage of evolution with Klopp moving to a 3-4-3 in the Super Cup in the second half. If he can have his players equally as comfortable in a 3-4-3 as a 4-3-3, it gives Klopp another edge. This would allow Alexander-Arnold and Robertson even higher up the pitch and allow better possession out of the back which could consequently draw their opponents out of their low block.
Manchester City are still going to be incredibly difficult to beat over the course of the season, but Liverpool are better placed to pip them to the post than anybody else in the league by some distance - if Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane all stay fit - Jurgen Klopp could become the first ever Liverpool manager to secure a Premier League title.
