Why can Leicester City make the top six this season in the Premier League?
Claude Puel was sacked on the 24th February 2019 following an uninspiring 16 months in charge. WIth Jamie Vardy and other players voicing their frustration at Claude Puel’s style, his sacking didn’t come as a surprise. Leicester City had played 27 league games and sat in 12th place, with no hope of silverware after being knocked out of the domestic cups by Manchester City and Newport County. 3 days later and Brendan Rodgers was appointed as Leicester City manager and walked away from a treble treble with Celtic.
Brenden Rodgers stepping in at a key part of the season was vital, Leicester City went from securing staying up in the league to challenging for a Europa League spot with Wolves, Watford and Everton. Gaining the 4th most points in the league since joining, Brenden Rodgers has had an instant and immense impact at Leicester City.
This season, the Foxes have kicked on and currently find themselves third in the table. Youri Tielemans and Dennis Praet have bolstered the squad significantly, whilst Calgar Soyuncu has stepped up in the absence of the world’s most expensive defender, Harry Maguire. There are plenty of exciting young players across the squad with the likes of Harvey Barnes, Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison, Ben Chilwell, Hamza Choudhury and Youri Tielemans all primed for big seasons, There’s no lack of experience, either, with Premier League winners Kasper Schmeichel, Jamie Vardy, Wes Morgan and Jonny Evans still having big roles to play at the club.
The obvious key to the Foxes squad is that midfield three of Wilfred Ndidi, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans. The trio complement each other really well, Ndidi was the league’s top tackler last season with 99 tackles, James Maddison was the best chance creator having created 100 chances , whereas Tielemans plays a creative role from slightly deeper. That midfield trio is so key: it offers adequate protection to what is a very progressive back four with Chilwell and Pereira both looking to get into the final third, as well as creating opportunities for the likes of Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy.
Hamza Choudhury offers tactical flexibility, too, with his tenacious ball-winning offer more cover to the defense when Leicester find themselves under pressure. Dennis Praet, who is a bit more of a two-way midfielder, is also a very strong rotation option having been brought in from Sampdoria in the summer - is this the best young midfield in the league or even perhaps Europe? They have a real chance of challenging that top six!
