The 4-4-2 diamond could do well against teams of similar quality such as Switzerland, Portugal and the Netherlands due to it’s competitive nature in the centre of the pitch whilst still maintaining a threat in attack with two centre forwards and a number 10 that can operate as a playmaker or a second striker. Southgate could set England up in a 4-4-2 diamond as follows: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Maguire, Shaw; Dier; Maddison, Henderson; Sterling; Rashford, Kane.
Against the best teams in world football, such as Spain, Germany, Belgium and World Champions, France, a 4-3-3 that defends in a 4-5-1 would be perfect for England. This would allow Southgate to play a more counter attacking based side with Pickford; Wan-Bissaka, Gomez, Maguire, Shaw; Alexander-Arnold, Dier, Henderson; Lingard, Kane, Rashford.
