Statman Dave looks at the big La Liga fixture this weekend, the Madrid derby. The main focus being on which of the Madrid sides would be favourites to beat Valverde’s Barcelona to the La Liga title.
So let’s start off with the home side, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. The Argentine tactician has changed has tweaked his system - since the arrival of the young Portuguees prodigy Joao Felix and departure of French international Antoine Griezmann to La Liga rivals Barcelona. Simeone has evolved from a flat 4-4-2 to a 4-4-2 diamond this season - with Partey playing at the base, Koke and Saul as eight’s and Thomas Lemar at the tip. Not only does the narrowing of the midfield create space for new-boys Kieran Trippier and Renan Lodi to get forward and join the attack with Partey dropping to cover but it also suits Simeone’s counter-attacking style - the diamond allows Simeone to play Lemar in a central role in which he can carry the ball at pace as well as deploying two natural creators on the eight line in Saul and Koke - up top Joao Felix usually partners either Alvaro Morata or Diego Costa.
As for Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid, they looked great on paper in the transfer market - bringing in Belgian international Eden Hazard from Premier League giants Chelsea and spending an astounding €300 Million with additions of Luka Jovic, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao to the Spanish giants.
Despite being second in the current league standings, it’s fair to say that Real Madrid have had a pretty disappointing start to the season. Humiliated by PSG on the European stage, picking up 5 points from their opening three games and struggling to integrate many of their big-name signings (Jovic, Militao) - Zinedine Zidane would have expected much better from his side. Zidane has switched between a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and even a 4-4-2 as he looks to find his best side. Gareth Bale has been involved in 25% of los blancos’ goals in La Liga this season and considering the Welsh international was allowed to leave over the summer transfer window - it shows the lack of strategy in the transfer market from Real Madrid.
So who do you think can beat Barcelona to the La Liga title this season?
