Statman Dave looks at Why Dani Ceballos will Arsenal’s most important player in the 2019/20 season. On the 22nd of July 2019 Arsenal agreed a loan deal for the Real Madrid midfielder - Unai Emery’s side managed to add Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz, Gabriel Martenilli, Kieran Tierney and William Saliba who will join the Gunners next summer.
After losing Aaron Ramsey to Serie A side Juventus, Arsenal needed to add depth in midfield. Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendouzi are more the defensive side in terms of style - Unai Emery team lost goals & creativity from midfield with Aaron Ramsey. The difference in quality between Arsenal and the top six sides in midfield was certainly something to be addressed. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City with Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho and David Silva already in the side - added Rodri from Atletico Madrid to their already stacked midfield. If Arsenal are to come anywhere near that level, then signings like ex Real Betis star Dani Ceballos are key and even just a loan deal could up the quality.
Ceballos is the playmaker that Arsenal have missed since Santi Cazorla, a roaming playmaker capable of popping up all over the pitch with the ball, against Burnley - this was Ceballos. Starting in defensive midfield, Emery pushed him to number 10 as the game wore on and the Spaniard was at the heart of everything Arsenal did well. On the stroke of half time, Joe Willock played into Ceballos but a deft touch from the playmaker diverted the ball out to Monreal - Monreal drove to the final third and passed back to Ceballos before Ceballos slipped Monreal in to cut the ball back for Reiss Nelson to score, Monreal was flagged offside but that’s an Unai Emery goal. Getting the ball wide quickly and getting the full backs in behind to cut back for the forwards and Ceballos was key to the move. On the 64th minute Ceballos assisted Aubameyang. Ceballos picked the ball up in Burnley's half and looked for the switch out to Pepe but the pass was closed down. Ceballos pressed and regained possession, setting Aubameyang to cut in and score. It wasn’t the most glamorous assist but it was more of what Emery wants to see, high pressing from his number 10. Against Burnley, Dani Ceballos attempted five tackles, three more than any other Arsenal player.
